Every year, thousands of men, women, and children succumb to the overbearing effects of the summer heat. If your body is not properly prepared, heat can take you out of commission quickly and in worse cases, lead to potential heat exhaustion and even heat stroke which can have lasting negative consequences on your body.
If the heat is on, it is time to take precautions. Heat can take its toll and here are 5 tips for staying cool in the Summer time heat:
- Stay indoors whenever possible - This one seems like a no-brainer, but when the sun is shining and the sky is blue, many people venture outdoors to get some much needed Vitamin D. The problem is, they also often ignore how truly hot it is and want to take advantage of the sunny weather. If the heat is excessive, take the recommended advice of staying indoors near a fan or in an air conditioned room.
- Stay hydrated - Even if you are not particularly thirsty, it is vital to your health to keep your body hydrated. Water is great as is sports drinks that contain electrolytes. Keep some of this fluid with you at all times if you have to be outside and drink it throughout the day. Kids especially need to be reminded and even told to drink more as their playtime often outranks their thirst which can lead to dire consequences.
Stay out of direct sunlight - Even if you are properly hydrated, being in direct sunlight can negate much of the benefits your body provides through the sweating process. Sweating allows your body to secrete fluid which can then cool the skin as the air hits it and it begins to evaporate.
In direct sunlight, however, the sun can evaporate the sweat as soon as it is secreted thereby lessening the cooling effects for your body. Seek shade and limit your time in direct sunlight whenever possible.- Wear a hat when you have to be in direct sunlight - Wearing a hat can help lessen the impact of the sun when you do have to be in direct sunlight. A wide brim or bill is crucial as well to help keep sunlight off your face. In addition, as your head sweats, the sweat will go into your hat (provided you have a cotton or similar fabric hat) which will help cool you down a bit as well.
- Wear cotton based loose fitting clothing - Light cotton fabrics are the best to wear to help keep you cool on super hot days. Sweat gathering in them along with their allowing some space between you and the fabric will act as your personal air conditioner throughout the day. When you wear tight fitting clothes, your sweat is often trapped between you and your tight outfit which can prevent your body from cooling itself off properly.
Remember, no matter how beautiful it may look outside, don’t eve underestimate the power of the sun. Excessive heat can take out anybody and if you are going to be out in it, you are wise to follow the tips above to ensure you stay healthy and get all the benefits of the sunshine WITHOUT any of the potential negative outcomes. Keep cool, stay healthy and enjoy your summer!
