Computers today typically come with an onboard graphics chip that is hard wired into the PC’s motherboard. This usually gives perfectly adequate performance for everyday computer use. However, if you want to use your computer for certain graphically intensive tasks, for example gaming or video editing, you will see a significant performance boost if you install a dedicated graphics card, which will feature a more powerful graphics processor than a typical onboard graphics chip.

Installing such an external graphics card is quite an easy procedure, even for someone with little or no experience in PC maintenance.

PC motherboards almost always have expansion slots for the purpose of installing additional hardware components such as graphics cards and sound cards. You should start by consulting the manual for your motherboard, which was supplied in the box with your PC, to see what expansion slots are available to you, and so to establish what kind of card will be suitable for your motherboard.

Until recently, external graphics cards commonly used an interface called AGP, which was accessed via an expansion slot on the PC motherboard. Many motherboards today still have an AGP slot into which you can install an AGP compatible graphics card. However, it is becoming the norm for graphics cards to use the PCI-E (‘PCI Express’) interface, which is also used for other expansion cards. You should have at least one PCI-E slot on your motherboard, maybe more.

Installing an expansion card into a PC is easy but certain precautions are required. Firstly, you should switch off your PC and unplug it from the mains supply. Now, open up the PC case and familiarize yourself with the location of the relevant expansion slot.

Before removing the graphics card from its packaging and handling it, it is important to discharge any static electricity from your body. This is easily done by touching something metallic like the case of your PC. After you have done this, you may pick up the graphics card, but you should avoid touching the gold contacts area.

Now, line up the contacts on the graphics card with the receiving area of the expansion slot. Modern expansion cards are deliberately designed so that they can only be inserted into the slot one way, so if it goes into the slot, you have connected it the right way. You will usually need to apply some pressure to get the card to go all the way into the slot. When it has gone all the way in, there will usually be a ‘click’ sound or a latch of some sort will come up. Either way, it will be obvious that your card has been inserted all the way. This is important, because if the card is not inserted fully it is likely not to work.

Having inserted the card, you can now close up the PC case and reconnect it to the mains electricity supply. When you turn your PC back on, the new graphics card will be detected and you will have to install the driver for the card. If your graphics card came with a driver CD, you should insert it into the PC’s DVD or CD drive at this point. Once you have installed the driver, your new graphics card should work and you will begin to see the benefits of enhanced graphics and video performance.

Sucking the thumb is a thing that many children do early on and it is a habit that should be regarded as entirely natural. In fact it has been shown that unborn babies do it in the womb. Thumb sucking is a natural, self-comforting, relaxing mechanism. However, when the habit persists beyond about the age of five, it can certainly be a problem.

Most children who suck their thumbs simply grow out of the habit. Therefore, with a child under the age of about five, you should just let them do it and not make any attempt to stop the thumb sucking. However, when thumb sucking persists it can start to cause physical problems. Most notably it can have a detrimental effect on the correct development of the teeth. Therefore, at a certain point it is wise to take steps to stop the habit before any damage is done.

There are various methods of getting a child to stop sucking their thumb. The simplest way is to gently reason with the child. You can point out that he or she no longer wears a diaper or requires feeding with a bottle of milk. In the same way, you can identify thumb sucking as another thing that babies and toddlers do, and that older children do not do. The message may not get through straight away, because after all there is an element of compulsion about the habit, but in most cases children will gradually get the message and give up thumb sucking.

As well as persuasion, one way to weaken the habit of thumb sucking is to distract your child whenever you see thumb sucking start. By getting your child interested in conversation, or another activity or game, you can distract the youngster from the thumb sucking. Gradually the compulsion gets weakened.

Getting angry or exasperated with a child who sucks their thumb is not a good way to proceed. In fact, if you go down this road it may stress your child and actually make the thumb sucking worse. Instead, you should be patient and use gentle persuasion and distraction, but not expect results overnight.

Grits are a well-loved staple of Southern US cuisine, and these days they are also growing in popularity in other parts of the world. Grits are made out of ground corn and usually eaten as a side dish at breakfast time, although they work equally well with dinner. They are quite easy to make, provided you know what you’re doing, so follow these tips to get perfect grits every time!

To make grits you must start by boiling water in a pan. For a decent serving of grits, measure out four cups of water into the pan, adding about a quarter teaspoon of salt, then bring the water to the boil.

When the water has boiled, quickly add a teaspoon of butter and bring the pan to the boil again. At this point add in the required amount (one cup) of corn grits. You should take care to stir the pan continuously while adding in the grits.

When you have added your grits, reduce the heat on the stove to a medium setting and put the lid back on the pan. Allow the grits to cook on a moderate heat for about five minutes, then remove the pan lid and give the grits a good stir to avoid lumpiness and to prevent any grits from getting stuck to the pan bottom.

Now, turn off the heat and cover the pan again, allowing the grits to stand for about ten minutes. This is necessary to allow the grits to cool down a little before serving; otherwise they will be scaldingly hot.

After the ten minutes are up, you can take the lid off the pan, add in and stir some more butter, and then your grits are ready to serve! For a classic Southern-style breakfast, serve the grits with sausages, eggs, bacon, and toast.

There is increasing concern these days about the amount of data stored by different websites relating to the online activities of their users. One of the prime targets of this concern is Google, which covers not only the search engine itself but also the Google user accounts that enable log in to Gmail, YouTube, Blogger, to name but three Google-owned services. In this article we will explain how to keep to a minimum the amount of data stored in your Google account.

Almost everyone nowadays uses Google to search the internet. At the same time there are a lot of people who search Google while logged in to a Google account, for example a Gmail account. You may not be aware but a default setting on a Google account is to retain a user’s ‘Web History’. What this means is that Google searches performed while you are logged in are stored as part of your account settings. The benefit of this to you is that previous searches are taken into account when a new search is carried out, and the results of the new search may be more biased towards what you want to see, in terms of websites you may have visited before.

On the other hand, you may prefer to have a standard search, and also not have your data stored by Google. The latter issue could be a worry for anyone who shares a computer and does not want others to find out what searches they have been performing on Google.

To turn off Google’s ‘Web History’ feature, you should go to the settings page of your Google account, and then click on ‘Web History’. The default setting is for ‘Web History’ to be turned on. To disable it, click on ‘Pause Web History’. On the same page you can also delete all or selected items that were previously stored when ‘Web History’ was enabled.

When Google first introduced what it calls ‘Personalized Search’, it was enabled only for logged in users with ‘Web History’ turned on. In 2009, this was changed so that non logged in users would also receive ‘Personalized Search’. This is achieved by storing cookies in your browser. Therefore if you do not want this data to be stored, you should clear Google cookies when exiting your browser.

In the summer time there is nothing to compare with having your friends round for home cooked hamburgers in the backyard. Kicking back with a hamburger and a beer is what summer is all about, but what puts a dampener on things is when the burgers are poor. Sure, you can pile on the mayonnaise or mustard but ideally the burger should stand on its own merits, without the need for excessive garnish.

The number one mistake that many people make when cooking hamburgers is to use the wrong kind of meat. In this health conscious age, many folk assume that lean cuts are the way to go, but this is not always so. To be sure, you should eat healthy whenever you can, but every once in a while you can indulge your taste buds. It is a proven fact that fattier meat is more flavorsome in a burger, so this is the type of meat you should go for, unless you plan on disappointing your guests.

Another essential for that perfect hamburger is to use good quality buns. You may be tempted to save money by using dirt cheap buns, but these are often limp to the touch and comparatively tasteless. Your guests will appreciate higher quality buns, which means the evening will go with a swing. Saving a few dollars on burger buns makes no sense at all.

One way of adding zest to your burgers is to season them with something tasty before cooking. An excellent method is to soak the patties in a good onion soup before grilling. This will definitely add a punch to that burger taste.

When it’s time to get cooking, it is advisable to use charcoal rather than gas as your fuel. Gas gets the job done well enough, but adds nothing to the flavor, whereas the charcoal smoke actually adds a little something to the taste of the cooked meat.

The cooking process is simple enough: just keep that meat turning, and never allow it to get burned. Make sure it is cooked through, but not overcooked, and then serve promptly while the meat is still piping hot.

Credit card fraud is a big problem today but there are a lot of things you can do to keep your chances of being defrauded to an absolute minimum.

Although we hear a lot in the news about online fraud involving hacking of credit card information, old fashioned fraud is still a major problem. One old fashioned method used by fraudsters and thieves is to intercept paper credit card statements sent by mail. Such paper statements contain enough information for a thief to attempt fraud, since the statement will supply the thief with your name and address and the number of your credit card. The obvious solution to this problem is to cancel paper statements and to manage your account online.

Whether you get paper statements or online statements, it is vital to go through your account each month to check for any suspicious activity. If you overlook any such fraudulent transactions you will not be able to claim for any loss at a later date, since credit card companies are quite strict in demanding that any fraudulent transactions be reported immediately.

If you prefer to keep receiving paper credit card statements, you should nevertheless take great care to dispose of them safely. Fraudsters are known to sift through dumpsters looking for personal information, so before throwing any old statements in the trash, you should shred them so that nothing on them remains legible.

Another tried and trusted method of credit card fraud is to ‘clone’ the card while it is out of view of the card holder. When paying for goods at stores, or after a meal at a restaurant, do not allow staff to take your card away ‘for processing’. The card should be charged at your table or at the counter. Alarm bells should ring at any request to take the card ‘out back for a minute’.

When you use your credit card on the internet you should only do so on so-called secure sites, which encrypt your transactions so they can not easily be read by any hacker. Unfortunately there is not much you can do to stop the actions of determined hackers who can, on occasion, take down a whole website, in the process gaining access to all customers’ stored, encrypted details. On the other hand, since such sophisticated attacks seem to be becoming increasingly common, it might be wise not to store your card details on websites. On many websites you can choose not to store your card information, which of course means you will be required to enter the card information afresh with your next transaction. But perhaps it is better to be safe than sorry.

If you ever move into an apartment previously occupied by a heavy smoker you will soon become aware of the foul odor left behind by that previous tenant. Cigarette smoke is notorious for permeating fabrics and upholstery so that the odors can persist for years. This is extremely annoying, not to mention repellent, but the good news is that it is possible to eliminate these unpleasant smells. However, this will not be accomplished overnight.

When a cigarette smoke smell persists in an apartment or condo, it is usually because the smoke has become impregnated into soft fabrics and furnishings. So, to begin with, you should launder any curtains and drapes thoroughly.

Carpets and rugs are the next things to be concerned about. Vacuuming will not be enough. You must shampoo all carpets and rugs and scrub down any hard flooring surfaces.

Baking soda is a useful weapon against foul tobacco smoke odors. You should sprinkle some of it onto rugs, couches, and armchairs. Leave it overnight and it will do a good job of absorbing odors.

Another good method of ridding an apartment or condo of smoke odors is to pour white distilled vinegar into a glass bowl and leave it to stand. One such bowl of vinegar should be placed in each room overnight. The next day you will be amazed at the extent to which this method can absorb and banish odors. Another substance that acts in a similar way, by absorbing the bad smells, is cat litter. This is of course a product designed with a similar effect in mind in its everyday use.

The above methods should go a long way towards getting rid of problematic tobacco smoke odors. With regard to the walls of the apartment, these should be washed down in an attempt to remove both odors and any discoloration due to exposure to smoke. If this method is not completely effective, you may be forced to repaint the walls throughout the apartment.

Buying an appropriate children’s car seat is not only a legal necessity but a matter of life and death. Choose the wrong car seat and you may meet the strict legal requirement but pay a terrible price if you and your child have the misfortune to be involved in an auto smash.

For a newborn babe, or any infant under about a year in age, a back-facing seat in the car is an absolute must. The reason for this is that infants have weak necks, and in an accident a forward-facing seat could cause their necks to jerk forward violently, causing serious injury. A rear-facing seat protects against this possibility.

Once your baby is over about a year in age, you can switch to a forwards-facing seat. By this time, kids’ necks are stronger so the issue of neck vulnerability pretty much goes out the window. Moreover, by this time kids are beginning to be more socially-focused, as well as more interested in their general surroundings. A forwards-facing seat enables junior to enjoy the ride, as well as making it possible to see you in the front of the auto. There are quite a few different models of this type of car seat available, and you can perhaps choose one that you regard as offering the best comfort, as well as additional features like meal trays and cup holders.

There will come a time when your child is too small to wear a seat belt but at the same time is too big to fit in their car seat. The solution is to get a booster seat, which places the child up in a higher position than just sitting on the back seat of the car alone, making it possible for him or her to wear a seat belt.

One option to consider is to purchase a model of car seat that you can later convert to be a booster seat. On the other hand, if you have two children, this may be inconvenient, since you can move the older child on to a newly purchased booster seat, while using the available car seat for the younger child.

In this day and age payments are routinely made online rather than by check, but nevertheless checks are still a convenient method of making some payments. Unlike electronic payments, which are instant debits from your account and therefore not reversible, checks can be cancelled. It is not recommended that you cancel checks without good reason, mainly because cancellation will incur a fee at the bank. But if for some reason you really must cancel a check, here is a brief guide to what’s involved.

In order to cancel a check you must act fast. Once the recipient of the check has paid it in at their bank, the payment cannot be reversed. To cancel the check you must either contact your bank by telephone or visit the bank in person. You will be asked to supply your account details and also the number of the check, as well as the name of the company or individual the check was made payable to. To avoid delay, you should have all this information ready before you pick up the telephone or call in at the bank. You should note that if you plan on cancelling the check in person, it is far easier for the bank to process your request if you visit the branch where your bank account is registered.

Cancelling a check is almost certain to incur a fee. These fees vary from one bank to another, so in the case of a low value check it may not make sense to cancel it if the fee is higher than the value of the check.

There are different reasons for cancelling checks. One example is if an unforeseen, urgent expense arises suddenly and your account does not have sufficient funds to cover both the check and the new expense. If it becomes necessary to cancel a check, you should, if possible, contact the payee of your check to explain the situation. The payee may not be pleased but you can at least help him or her avoid the inconvenience of a trip to the bank to pay in a check that has already been cancelled. Warning the payee is preferable to you doing nothing. Not only is it polite, but by giving him or her a warning the payee will only have one reason to be displeased with you instead of two.

Athlete’s Foot is a distressing fungal infection that causes severe itching and skin flaking from the feet. If left untreated, blisters can form, as well as painful open sores. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure, so here is a brief guide to preventing athlete’s foot, or at least minimizing your chances of getting it.

The fungal infection commonly called athlete’s foot is spread from one person to another. Any place where people mingle in bare feet is a prime transmission area, but, as the name suggests, sports changing rooms and swimming pools are among the most high risk areas.

Obviously, if you play sport it is difficult to entirely avoid having bare feet in the changing room. Nevertheless, there are certain things you can do to minimize the risk of getting athlete’s foot. These include not sharing towels, shoes or socks with other people, as well as ensuring that after any sports session you wash your feet thoroughly and dry them afterwards with a clean towel. The latter precaution is very important, since the fungi associated with athlete’s foot thrive in damp, moist conditions. Therefore you should take great care to dry your feet completely before putting your socks on. If you do a lot of sport, one additional thing you can do to protect yourself from athlete’s foot is to treat your toes and feet with an anti-fungal cream.

Outside the sports area, general precautions for prevention of athlete’s foot are the same: foot hygiene is important, as are drying the feet thoroughly and always wearing clean socks. Another important factor is your choice of footwear. Leather shoes are breathable; in other words moisture, i.e. sweat, is able to evaporate through the leather, instead of being trapped inside the shoe, as is the case with footwear made from synthetic materials. Sadly, a lot of sneakers and other athletic footwear fall into this latter category, so you should avoid wearing sneakers and the like for extended periods.
